Our First Day in Mobile

Today was our first day in Mobile. We spent the majority of the day downtown, checking out the sights. We had lunch at "Spot of Tea", a restaurant/cafe/dinner theater/Hallmark store.

After lunch, Katie and I started off on our exploration of the downtown area. We paroozed a few local shops, and made our way to some of the historical attractions. We visited the Museum of Mobile which, thanks to a surprise military discount, was free for the both of us. The museum was interesting, basically just a timeline of the history of Mobile. Mostly military history, with a bit of slave trade and cotton industry thrown in. There was also an impressive collection of huge, super detailed dollhouses, all made by the same artist, but the exhibit was missing parts, namely the background information on the artist and his family. The houses were great though.

From the museum we made our way to Fort Conde museum. it was a 4/5 scale replica of a third of the original Spanish fort that once stood in Mobile Bay area. It was interesting, and had a lot of actual artifacts found at the site of the fort. As you can see above, getting thrown in the stockade is no fun.

We walked around for a while, and saw some great old houses that are awaiting restoration by the historical society. The few that had already been restored still featured gas porchlights, as well as gas streetlamps. Katie saw a spooky tree and grabbed a picture with the decrepit houses all around it.

As it turns out, most of Mobile is closed on Monday, so there wasn't as much to do as we expected. We swung by an ice cream/chocolate shop for some treats, then went across the street to Hurricane Brewery. They had a great special on their 8 different brewed-in-house beers, so we each had one. Katies parents met back up with us there, then we headed back to Eva and Paul's house. We went out to the Gumbo Shack for dinner, and it was delicious. We followed that up with some ice cream before we finally called it a night.

Hey,
Here is another reason why you, Tebben, are cool, your blogs are economically written and hysterical at the same time. You get the action down and the anicdotes (is that how one spells it?) with a quiet flair. Listen, bub, that is so not easy.
Anyway, my darlings, I'm so glad you are now at home in your first place. Gentleness will be your best friend, slow to anger and quick to compliment is such a lovely homily, I'm still trying to do it, but boy does it work. I am so glad that you two found each other. I'll see you this weekend, I hope. Love Grauntie
